Denise was fortunate to have many great mentors in high school and college. Her college major was business administration, but her minor was theater. She acted in and directed plays at the University of San Diego and had an agent. Denise did some commercial and extra work, but realized quickly that acting and modeling were not for her. Friends and professors in college had celebrity connections and Denise has very fond memories of going to parties with Gladys Knight, Tom Cruise, Dan Fouts, Hank Bauer, Robin Williams, Sting, Bruce Springsteen, and President Reagan. At a dinner party at her friend’s house in La Jolla, President Reagan advised her to stay out of acting and politics and find a career making big money in business.
After graduating from The University of San Diego, Denise took President Reagan’s advice and moved to Iowa where she began careers in agriculture and real-estate. After living in Iowa for a few years, Denise went back to college to get a teaching certification and a Master of Education in School Counseling. Denise worked in Iowa schools as a high school business teacher and counselor for over ten years and had the opportunity to see the profound influence mentoring had on the middle and high school students she advised. Denise was awarded Iowa School Counselor of the Year from the Iowa School Counselor’s Association.
In 2012, Denise started life coaching and was referred by a lifelong friend to work with a celebrity and two professional athletes. These clients referred her to other clients. As Denise began working with celebrity clients and reconnecting with influential friends from the past, she was invited to multiple celebrity events including award shows, movie premieres, conventions, The World Series, and private parties. Over the last ten years, Denise had the opportunity to interact with and interview over 200 celebrities.
In Denise’s career as a counselor and life coach, she heard narratives and thought- provoking insights from celebrities and non-celebrities about their mentoring experiences. In listening to the stories of others, Denise realized that there are difference-makers in people’s lives and sadly, others whose presence only leaves pain and heartache on those they touch. In 2020, Denise received her Ph.D. from Drake University. Her dissertation was titled, Life In The Public Eye: A Narrative Investigation Of The Impact Of Mentor Relationships Of Celebrity Figures. Denise continues to learn from both positive and negative mentoring stories of others and analyze how mentoring impacted the lives.
